Overview / Future plans
I have edited a folk magazine over 30 years (Folklife West's predecessors Broadsheet / Somers Journal published & subsidised by Somers Trad Folk Club). I have learned that rapid huge changes don't work - witness the demise of some respected specialised print magazines after being available in WHSmiths! Instead we continue to improve our magazine at a manageable rate, and thank readers for their kind and encouraging comments ("Congratulations! It's an amazing magazine!").
- The magazines have never run at a profit, and are not expected to, given that mostly news, not adverts and reviews. So thanks to our Members for their support.
- We have been working on expanding Folk West, now renamed Folklife West. It has doubled in size over last 5 years.
- Folklife West publishers have produced various publications, we are now combining these (we've always wanted to, but didn't have the technology to support bigger magazines).
Details
- 2011: bought new equipment, thus enabling us to improve our Folk West magazine, and in particular to combine our publications.
- 2011 April,
- Folk West changed from A5 to A4
- Journal published, separately as before, and redesigned to be same layout and sizes as Folk West for future integration.
- 2011 July: changes as announced !

- 2011 October
- started to include a Folklife Diary (as in our Journal), a trial run for later integrating Journal.
- Folk West was renamed Folklife West to reflect the increased content.
- biggest-ever, 44 A4 pages - doubled in 5 years.
- include a Folk Directory, this time redesigned to be same layout and size, and so that our "1-line Directory summaries" in FW correspond to 1st line of Directory.
- Directory still available separately
- 2012 January
- Journal (including Folklife Diary) now included in Folklife West; still available separately. And it becomes quarterly!
- again our biggest ever - 48 A4 pages
- As to the future
- this will include a Folklife Traditions Directory in Oct 2012, included in FW, and still available separately, and we will develop the Journal (including Folklife Diary) further.
